Dendrocalamus Latiflorus

Latiflorus is fairly quick growing, after the first year or two, and extremely low maintenance once established. Because it is such a big bamboo, it can take a little while to get going but once it does, it can become fully grown in almost 3-4 years. Imagine a tree growing that fast! It is also very drought tolerant, so perfect for acreage. When there is a lot of rain just before and during spring, Latiflorus sends up a huge amount of shoots. When we have a lengthy dry period, it holds off producing new shoots until the rain comes.
Allow a big space to grow this bamboo and make sure you have access if harvesting is your goal.

We supply bamboo in all sizes, shapes, and colours, including the large clumping species Dendrocalamus Latiflorus (Taiwan Giant). This bamboo is a beautiful plant that grows about 10 to 18 metres tall and provides exceptional shade.
- The rich, dark green 70 to 150 millimetre culms are smooth and straight. It has lustrous, dark green leaves, a somewhat weeping form, and a tight growing habit.
- The species needs lots of sunny, partly shaded space. This is a magnificent feature plant for a large garden, acreage or rural property that grows fast after the first year or two.
- It becomes full-grown in three to four years. Avoid planting them in a windy area as they may split.
What You Should Know About Dendrocalamus Latiflorus
Also called the Sweet Bamboo, it is drought tolerant and low-maintenance once it gets going. It does not produce new shoots during a long dry spell but sprouts vast numbers of stalks when it rains and just before or during spring.
- The sweet-tasting, good-quality shoots are edible and used as a vegetable.
- You can harvest the culms for light, medium quality poles for temporary or house construction, fishing rafts, woven wares such as furniture and basketry, agricultural implements, paper making, bamboo boards, and chopsticks.
- People use the leaves as packing materials, to cook rice, make hats and roofs for boats.
